Flights are often the biggest part of a travel budget. The good news: a few simple habits can save you a lot of money on every trip.
1. Be flexible with your dates
Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday is often cheaper than at the weekend. The easiest way to see it is to compare flights with the “whole month” view and pick the cheapest day.
2. Compare first, then book
A comparison site shows hundreds of airlines at once. Once you have found the best option, also check the airline’s own website — sometimes it is cheaper or offers more flexible tickets.
3. Look at nearby airports
Flying into a secondary airport, or a city one hour away by train, can cut the price significantly. Many search engines let you add “nearby airports” in one click.
4. Book at the right time
For short-haul flights, 1–3 months ahead is usually a good window; for long-haul, 2–6 months. Avoid booking at the very last minute in high season.
5. Travel light
Low-cost airlines charge for bags and seats. Travelling with a cabin bag only is the easiest way to keep a cheap fare cheap.
6. Consider one-way tickets
Two one-way tickets on different airlines can be cheaper than a return ticket — just leave enough time between flights.
7. Travel off-season
Spring and autumn (the “shoulder seasons”) offer lower prices for flights and hotels, and far fewer crowds.
8. Check the total price
Always compare the final price with bags and seat selection included — a cheap headline fare can quickly become expensive.
9. Protect your trip
Cheap tickets are rarely refundable. Good travel insurance can cover cancellations for illness and other serious reasons.
