Car Rental Abroad: 8 Mistakes to Avoid

Insurance, fuel policy, deposits and hidden fees — how to rent a car abroad without stress.

Renting a car is the best way to explore beyond the big cities. But hidden fees and fine print can quickly make it expensive. Avoid these common mistakes.

1. Booking at the airport counter

Walk-in prices are almost always higher. Compare all rental companies online a few weeks before your trip.

2. Ignoring the fuel policy

Choose “full to full”: you pick up the car with a full tank and return it full. “Full to empty” policies charge you for a full tank at high prices.

3. Not understanding the insurance

Basic insurance often comes with a large excess (the amount you pay if the car is damaged). Full cover reduces this to zero and saves a lot of stress.

4. Forgetting the credit card

Most companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Debit cards are often refused.

5. Skipping the photos

Before leaving the car park, film the car all around, including wheels and windscreen. Do the same when you return it.

6. Not checking your licence

Some countries require an International Driving Permit in addition to your licence. Check before you go.

7. Adding extras at the counter

GPS and extra drivers are expensive at the desk. Use your phone for navigation and add drivers when booking online.

8. Returning late

A delay of an hour can cost you an extra day. Plan enough time to refuel and return the car.
