Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is about 12 km north-east of the city centre and very well connected. Depending on your terminal, budget and destination, the best option changes — and the Metro has a hidden airport supplement many visitors don’t expect.
This guide compares every way to get from Madrid Airport to the city centre in 2026, and explains how Madrid’s Metro tickets and tourist passes work. Metro line 8
The pink line 8 links the airport (stations at T1-T2-T3 and T4) with Nuevos Ministerios in about 15–20 minutes, where you can change to lines 6 and 10 or Cercanías trains. Trains run from about 06:00 to 01:30 (source).
- The airport supplement: trips to or from the airport stations cost an extra €3 on top of a single or 10-trip ticket (source). A combined single airport ticket costs about €6 (source).
- Tourist pass holders don’t pay the supplement (source).
- You need a Tarjeta Multi — a rechargeable card costing €2.50 — to load tickets (source).
Cercanías C-1 train (Terminal 4)
If you land at T4, the commuter train is the best deal: about €2.60 with no airport supplement, reaching Chamartín in about 12 minutes and Atocha in about 25 (source). Trains run about every 30 minutes, roughly 06:00 to midnight. It also stops at Nuevos Ministerios and Recoletos on the way to Atocha.
Exprés Aeropuerto bus 203
A flat €5 fare, paid by card on board, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. By day it stops at all terminals, O’Donnell, Plaza de Cibeles and Atocha in about 30–40 minutes; at night (23:30–06:00) it ends at Cibeles (source). Great for late arrivals and hotels near the Prado or Atocha.
Taxi and ride-hailing
- Taxi: a fixed fare of €33 from the airport to any address inside the M-30 ring road, day and night, luggage included (source). Outside the M-30, the meter applies.
- Uber, Cabify and Bolt: about €25–40 depending on demand, with designated pick-up points (source).
