Quick answer: Rio de Janeiro mixes beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema), mountains (Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf), samba and the world’s biggest Carnival (around 5–10 February 2027). From Galeão Airport, an Uber to Copacabana costs about R$60–110, and an official prepaid taxi about R$120–180. Since April 2025, US, Canadian and Australian citizens need a Brazil e-visa (US$80.90), while UK and most EU visitors don’t need a visa for tourism. Use Uber at night and keep your phone out of sight. The best months are April–June and September–November.

Rio is one of the most spectacular cities on earth, a city of granite peaks dropping into the Atlantic, rainforest in the middle of town, and a contagious beach culture. This guide covers the essentials and links to our detailed Rio guides.
