Athens is where Western history starts: the Parthenon above the city, ancient agoras beside lively tavernas, and rooftop bars facing floodlit temples. It’s also a gritty, energetic modern capital and the gateway to the Greek islands. This guide covers the essentials and links to our detailed Athens guides.

FAQ: Athens travel
How many days do you need in Athens?
Two full days covers the Acropolis, the museum, the Agora and Plaka. Three or four days lets you add a day trip to Cape Sounion, Delphi or an island.
Is Athens worth visiting or should I go straight to the islands?
Give Athens at least two days. The Acropolis and its museum are world-class, and the food scene is excellent and cheap.
Is Athens safe?
Generally yes. Watch for pickpockets on the metro (especially Line 1 and the airport line) and around Monastiraki and Omonia.
Is Athens expensive?
It’s mid-range for Europe. Meals and transport are affordable, but major sites now charge more, such as €30 for the Acropolis and €20 for the Acropolis Museum.
