A day-by-day Athens itinerary for 2 to 4 days: the Acropolis, Plaka, the Agora, museums, Cape Sounion and Delphi.

Updated October 26, 2026 · 3 min read
Quick answer: Day 1: the Acropolis at 8am, then the Acropolis Museum, Plaka and Anafiotika, and sunset on Filopappou Hill. Day 2: the Ancient Agora, Monastiraki and Psyrri, Syntagma and the Changing of the Guard, the National Garden, and Lycabettus at sunset. Day 3: the National Archaeological Museum in the morning and Cape Sounion at sunset, or a day trip to an island. Day 4: Delphi.

Athens’ main sights are close together, so two days covers the essentials. This plan puts the outdoor ancient sites in the cool mornings and saves the museums for the hot afternoons.

Day 1: The Acropolis and Plaka

Time Plan
8:00 The Acropolis, with a timed ticket booked in advance (how to book).
Late morning The Acropolis Museum, about 2 hours, in the air-conditioning.
Afternoon Lunch in Koukaki, then wander Plaka and Anafiotika.
Evening Sunset on Filopappou Hill, then dinner with an Acropolis view.

Day 2: The Agora, the markets and Syntagma

Time Plan
Morning The Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus, then the Roman Agora.
Midday The Monastiraki flea market and the Varvakios central market, with souvlaki for lunch.
Afternoon Syntagma and the Changing of the Guard, the National Garden, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Evening Sunset from Lycabettus Hill, then drinks in Psyrri.

Day 3: The museum and Cape Sounion

Spend the morning at the National Archaeological Museum. In the afternoon, take a tour or bus down the coast to Cape Sounion to watch the sunset at the Temple of Poseidon. Alternatively, take a ferry from Piraeus to Aegina or Hydra for the day.

Day 4 (optional): Delphi

Delphi is about 2.5–3 hours each way by road. Its mountain sanctuary and museum make one of Greece’s great day trips. A guided tour is the easiest way to do it. See the best day trips from Athens.

Itinerary tips

  • From November to March, check the free Sundays (the first and third of the month), which still need a reservation.
  • In July and August, keep the midday hours for museums, lunch and rest.

FAQ: Athens itinerary

Is one day enough in Athens?

One day gets you the Acropolis, the museum and Plaka (day 1 above), but two days is much more relaxed.

Should I visit Athens before or after the islands?

Either works. Many travellers do Athens first to recover from jet lag, then head to Piraeus for the ferries.

Can I visit Athens on a cruise stop?

Yes. From Piraeus, take the metro or a taxi to the centre (30–40 minutes) and focus on the Acropolis and Plaka. Book an Acropolis slot that leaves time to get back.
