Quick answer: Tokyo Skytree is taller (634 m) with decks at 350 m and 450 m; tickets cost from ¥1,800 online for the Tembo Deck or from ¥3,000 for both decks. Tokyo Tower (333 m) costs ¥1,500 for the Main Deck (150 m) or ¥3,300 online for the Top Deck Tour (250 m). Choose Skytree for the highest views (and a chance of Mount Fuji on clear days) and Tokyo Tower for the classic icon in central Tokyo and the best photos of a tower. Want a rooftop instead? Shibuya Sky is open-air.

Tokyo has two famous towers, and many visitors wonder which one to pick. The modern Tokyo Skytree in Oshiage is the tallest tower in the world, with record-breaking views. The red-and-white Tokyo Tower in Minato, opened in 1958, is the city’s retro symbol.

Which has the better view?

  • Skytree is much higher, so the view is wider: on clear days, especially in winter mornings, you may see Mount Fuji. But from 350–450 m, the city can look flat and distant.
  • Tokyo Tower is lower and more central, so you see the city’s skyscrapers up close — and its night-time illumination makes it the most photographed tower in Tokyo.
  • The paradox: from Skytree you can’t photograph Skytree, and from Tokyo Tower you can’t see Tokyo Tower. Many photographers prefer views of Tokyo Tower — for example from Roppongi Hills or Shiba Park.

How to get there

Tokyo Skytree

Skytree sits directly above Tokyo Skytree Station (Tobu Skytree Line) and Oshiage Station (Hanzomon, Asakusa, Keisei lines). It’s a 20-minute walk or one stop from Asakusa, so it pairs perfectly with Sensō-ji — see Day 1 of our Tokyo itinerary. The Tokyo Solamachi mall and an aquarium are at its base.

Tokyo Tower

Nearest stations (source): Akabanebashi (Toei Oedo Line, 5 minutes’ walk), Onarimon (Toei Mita Line, 6 minutes), Kamiyacho (Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, 7 minutes) and JR Hamamatsucho (15 minutes). Combine it with Zojoji Temple and Shiba Park, or Roppongi.
