Kyoto escaped the destruction of World War II and kept a city full of wooden temples, moss gardens and narrow lanes. It’s also one of Japan’s busiest destinations, so a little planning — early starts, the right base, booking ahead for the seasons — makes a big difference. This Kyoto travel guide brings everything together.

Getting there and around
From Tokyo, the Nozomi shinkansen takes about 2 hours 15 minutes — see Tokyo to Kyoto. From Kansai airport, the Haruka limited express takes 80–90 minutes (¥3,060–3,590) — see Kansai airport to Kyoto. In the city, buses cost ¥230 a ride but get very crowded; combine the subway, JR and private railways with walking where you can. An IC card such as ICOCA or Suica works on almost everything.
When to visit
Late March–early April (cherry blossoms) and mid-November–early December (autumn leaves) are the most beautiful and the busiest. May and October are pleasant and slightly calmer; summer is hot and humid; January–February is cold but quiet. See the best time to visit Kyoto.
Before you go
- Accommodation tax: since March 2026, ¥200–10,000 per person per night depending on the room rate — rates.
- JR Pass: rarely worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto alone — see is the JR Pass worth it?
- Flights: compare flights to Osaka Kansai.
- Internet: get a Japan eSIM.
- Insurance: compare travel insurance for Japan.
Etiquette and practical tips
- Respect Gion’s private lanes: photography is banned on some private streets, and you should never follow or block geiko and maiko.
- Don’t eat while walking in busy shopping streets; eat at the stall.
- Carry cash for small temples and shrines, though cards are increasingly accepted.
- Start popular sights at opening (Fushimi Inari before 8:00, Kiyomizu-dera at 6:00) to avoid the crowds.
- Send luggage between hotels with a delivery service (“takkyubin”) instead of taking big cases on buses.
