Tokyo to Kyoto is the most popular route in Japan, and the bullet train makes it easy: city centre to city centre in just over two hours. This guide compares trains, fares and booking options, plus the cheaper alternatives. Fares are approximate 2026 figures from Ekitan (April 2026); check JR before you travel.
Options compared
| Option | Time | One-way price (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nozomi shinkansen | About 2h10–2h20 | About ¥14,500 reserved / ¥13,500 unreserved | Speed, most travellers |
| Hikari shinkansen | About 2h40 | Similar to Nozomi | JR Pass holders |
| Kodama shinkansen | About 4h | Similar; discounted tour tickets available | Not recommended unless cheaper deals |
| Green Car (first class) | Same as train | About ¥19,000 | Comfort, quieter carriage |
| Overnight or day bus | 7–9h | Much cheaper | Tight budgets |
| Flight to Osaka (Itami/Kansai) | 1h15 + transfers | Varies | Rarely worth it |
Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama?
- Nozomi — fewest stops and most frequent. The default choice if you buy a normal ticket.
- Hikari — a few more stops. Fully covered by the JR Pass without supplement.
- Kodama — stops everywhere; only worth it with special discounted packages.
How to buy tickets
- smartEX — the official Tokaido Shinkansen app and website; register, book and board by tapping a linked IC card or using a QR ticket. Seat maps let you choose a window seat.
- Ticket machines at Tokyo and Shinagawa stations — English menus, cash or card.
- JR ticket offices (Midori-no-madoguchi) — staff help, but queues can be long.
- Booking platforms — easy in English, usually with a small fee. Compare shinkansen tickets and rail passes.
Reserved or unreserved? Unreserved cars (usually 1–3) are cheaper, but during Golden Week, Obon, New Year and the cherry blossom and autumn seasons they fill up — reserve.
Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto?
For a simple Tokyo–Kyoto round trip, usually not: two shinkansen tickets cost much less than a 7-day JR Pass. It can pay off if you also travel to Hiroshima or further. Read is the JR Pass worth it? for the numbers.
Tips for the journey
- Mount Fuji: on the way to Kyoto, sit on the right side (seat E in standard cars, D in Green Cars). The best view is about 40–45 minutes after Tokyo, around Shin-Fuji, on clear mornings.
- Big luggage: suitcases over 160 cm (length + width + height) need an “oversized baggage” seat reservation, or send them ahead by delivery service.
- Food: buy an ekiben (station bento) at Tokyo Station before boarding.
- Stations: you can board at Tokyo, Shinagawa or Shin-Yokohama; trains arrive at Kyoto Station, right in the city.
- Quiet: keep phone calls to the space between carriages.
Arriving in Kyoto
Kyoto Station connects to the subway, JR lines to Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama, and city buses. If you’re staying near the station, you can walk; otherwise, take the subway or a taxi to save time.
