Quick answer: Petra, Jordan’s rose-red Nabataean city, needs 1–2 full days. Entry is JD 50 for one day (JD 55 for two, JD 60 for three), or JD 90 if you’re not staying overnight in Jordan. If you’ll stay at least 3 nights in Jordan, buy the Jordan Pass (from JD 70) before arrival: it includes Petra and waives the JD 40 visa fee. The best times are March–May and September–November.

Carved into sandstone cliffs more than 2,000 years ago, Petra is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gateway town is Wadi Musa, right next to the visitor centre.

Top things to do in Petra

  • The Siq: a 1.2 km canyon leading to the Treasury (Al-Khazneh).
  • The Monastery (Ad-Deir): about 800 steps up, bigger than the Treasury and far quieter.
  • High Place of Sacrifice: a hike with views over the whole city.
  • Royal Tombs and the Street of Facades.
  • Treasury viewpoint from above, via the Al-Khubtha trail.
  • Petra by Night: the Siq and Treasury lit by candles (selected evenings).
  • Little Petra and Wadi Rum nearby.
