Seasons explained
Spring (March–May)
Pleasant for sightseeing, with flowers in Park Güell and Montjuïc. Easter brings crowds. On 23 April (Sant Jordi) the streets fill with book and rose stalls — one of the city’s loveliest days.
Summer (June–August)
Beach season, festivals (Primavera Sound, Sónar, the Gràcia street festivals in August) and long evenings. It’s also hot, humid and crowded; book the Sagrada Família and Park Güell well ahead and plan sightseeing for mornings.
Autumn (September–November)
September is excellent: warm sea, fewer tourists and the La Mercè festival around 24 September, with fireworks and human towers. October is mild with occasional rain; November is quiet and cheaper.
Winter (December–February)
Mild and sunny days, short queues and the lowest prices, plus Christmas markets in December. Avoid the Mobile World Congress week, when hotels can cost several times more.
2026: Gaudí Year
2026 marks 100 years since Antoni Gaudí’s death, with more than 1,500 activities across the city. The Sagrada Família’s central Tower of Jesus Christ was blessed on 10 June 2026, and exhibitions run at Park Güell and other Gaudí sites through the year (The Local). Expect busier Gaudí sites and book early.
