How to book

  1. Book on the official Vatican Museums website as soon as you know your date — popular slots sell out weeks ahead in spring and summer.
  2. Choose a time slot; the earliest (8:00) and the late afternoon are the quietest.
  3. Bring your e-ticket on your phone and arrive 15 minutes early for security.
  4. Sold out? Resellers and guided tours often still have space. Compare Vatican Museums tickets and tours.

Dress code

Shoulders and knees must be covered in the museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s. No sleeveless tops, short shorts or short skirts, low necklines or bare midriffs, and hats off in sacred spaces. Clothes can’t be rented on site and staff refuse entry without a refund — in summer, carry a light scarf to cover up.

What to see

  • The Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo’s ceiling and Last Judgment. Photos and talking aren’t allowed.
  • The Raphael Rooms — including The School of Athens.
  • Pio-Clementino Museum — classical statues such as the Laocoön and the Apollo Belvedere.
  • Gallery of Maps — a 120-metre corridor of painted maps of Italy.
  • The Pinacoteca — paintings by Raphael, Leonardo and Caravaggio, often skipped and quiet.
  • The Bramante staircase — the famous spiral on the way out.

Allow at least 3 hours. The route to the Sistine Chapel is long and one-way, so don’t save it for the last 20 minutes.

St Peter’s Basilica

The basilica is free and not included in the museum ticket. You enter through its own security line in St Peter’s Square, which can be long by mid-morning — go early or late afternoon. The climb to the dome is paid separately and gives the best view over Rome. Some guided tours use a shortcut from the Sistine Chapel straight into the basilica, saving the second queue.

Tips

  1. Go at 8:00 or after 15:00 on weekdays; avoid Saturdays and free Sundays.
  2. Wednesday mornings are busy around St Peter’s because of the papal audience.
  3. The nearest metro is Ottaviano or Cipro (line A). Stay in Prati to walk there — see where to stay in Rome.
  4. Large bags must be left at the cloakroom.
  5. Eat before you go; there are cafés inside but they’re crowded.
