Best Time to Visit Rome: Weather by Month, Crowds & Prices

When to visit Rome: weather and crowds month by month, the best and cheapest months, key events like Easter and Ferragosto, and tips for each season.

Updated October 24, 2026 · 3 min read
Quick answer: the best time to visit Rome is April–May and late September–October: warm days (about 19–27°C), long opening hours and fewer crowds than summer. July–August is hot (often 31°C+) and crowded; November–February is the cheapest and quietest, with cool, sometimes rainy days. Avoid Easter week and Christmas–New Year unless you want the events, as prices peak.

Rome is a year-round city, but heat, crowds and prices change a lot by month. This guide goes through each season and month so you can choose the right time for your trip.

Seasons explained

Spring (March–May): the best balance

Mild weather, blooming parks and long days. Easter and Holy Week bring huge crowds and high hotel prices, especially around the Vatican. Book Colosseum and Vatican tickets as soon as your dates open — see Colosseum tickets.

Summer (June–August): hot and busy

Expect 30–35°C, long queues and crowded piazzas. Plan sightseeing for early morning and evening, and rest in the hottest hours. Around Ferragosto (15 August) many Romans leave and some family-run trattorias close for a week or two, but major sights stay open.

Autumn (September–November): warm light, fewer people

Late September and October are excellent: still warm, softer light, and fewer tour groups after mid-September. November is the rainiest month but the quietest and cheapest outside winter.

Winter (December–February): cheap and calm

Days of 8–14°C, short queues and the lowest hotel prices of the year — except at Christmas, New Year and Epiphany (6 January). The Colosseum closes earlier (16:30) in winter. Some catacombs close for a winter break.

Events worth planning around

  • Easter and Holy Week — papal masses in St Peter’s Square; very crowded.
  • 21 April — Rome’s birthday (Natale di Roma), with historical parades.
  • 29 June — feast of Saints Peter and Paul, a holiday in Rome; Vatican Museums closed.
  • 15 August — Ferragosto; the city empties.
  • December — Christmas markets in Piazza Navona and nativity scenes in churches.
  • First Sunday of each month — free entry to state museums and sites including the Colosseum (expect queues).

Tips for any season

  1. Book big sights 2–4 weeks ahead in spring and autumn, and as early as possible in summer.
  2. Pack comfortable shoes and a scarf for churches in every season.
  3. Carry a refillable bottle: Rome’s street fountains (“nasoni”) have free drinking water.

  5. Compare hotel prices for your dates — prices can double at Easter.
