Dubai Airport to City: Metro Timings, Taxi Fares & Transfers (2026)

Dubai Airport to the city in 2026: metro (AED 5–8.50), taxi to Downtown (about AED 70), Careem, Uber and transfers — with metro timings and tips.

Updated October 26, 2026 · 8 min read
Quick answer: from Dubai Airport (DXB) Terminals 1 and 3, the Dubai Metro Red Line is the cheapest way to the city (about AED 5–8.50, plus a Nol card). A taxi to Downtown Dubai costs about AED 70 and takes around 30 minutes; ride-hailing apps cost about AED 35–85. For the Palm, Dubai Marina, late-night arrivals or lots of luggage, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer (from about AED 120) is easier.

Good news: Dubai International Airport (DXB) is one of the closest big airports to its city centre. Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa are only about 15 km away, and the airport has its own metro stations. The bad news: Dubai is a spread-out city, so getting to Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah takes much longer than getting to Downtown or Deira.

This guide compares every way to get from Dubai Airport to the city in 2026 — metro, taxi, Careem and Uber, buses and private transfers — with prices in dirhams (AED), journey times, the best option for Downtown, Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah and Deira, metro hours, luggage tips and how to buy a Nol card. Facts are checked against recent guides such as Trvlogue’s 2026 airport transit guide and this 2026 transfer comparison; always check the RTA website for the latest fares.

Dubai Airport to the city: all options compared

Careem / Uber about AED 35–85 20–40 min Price comparison, card payment
RTA bus (401 / 402) about AED 5 25–45 min Deira and Bur Dubai on a tight budget
Private transfer from about AED 120–130 (sedan) 20–40 min Late arrivals, groups, Palm Jumeirah

*Our estimates outside rush hour. Prices from Trvlogue (updated Sept 2026) and Andreon Digital (verified May 2026). Add 10–20 minutes by road at rush hour (about 7:30–9:30 am and 5–7:30 pm).

Which terminal are you arriving at?

This matters more than you’d think:

  • Terminal 3 — Emirates flights. Has its own metro station.
  • Terminal 1 — most other international airlines. Has its own metro station.
  • Terminal 2 — mainly flydubai and some regional airlines. It has no metro station, so take a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a transfer.

If you’re flying into Dubai World Central (DWC, Al Maktoum Airport) instead, it’s much further from the city — plan on a taxi or transfer of about an hour.

Dubai Airport to the city by metro

The Red Line of the Dubai Metro runs from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 straight through Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown, Business Bay, Al Barsha and on to Dubai Marina. The trains are driverless, spotless and air-conditioned — a relief when it’s 40°C outside.

Dubai metro fare from the airport

Fares depend on how many zones you cross. The airport is in Zone 5 and the Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall area is in Zone 6 (source).

Zones travelled Silver Nol card Red ticket
Within 1 zone AED 3 AED 4
2 adjacent zones AED 5 AED 6
More than 2 zones AED 7.50 AED 8.50

Which Nol card should you buy?

  • Red ticket (AED 2): a paper ticket for a few journeys, rechargeable up to 10 trips. Fine for a short stay.
  • Silver card (AED 25, including AED 19 credit): the best choice if you’ll use the metro, tram and buses several times.
  • Gold card: gives you access to the Gold Class carriage, which costs about twice the standard fare but is calmer with luggage at busy times.

Buy and top up at the ticket offices or machines in the terminal metro stations. The same card works on buses, the tram and the water bus.

Dubai metro timings

  • Monday–Thursday: 5 am to midnight
  • Friday: 5 am to 1 am
  • Saturday: 5 am to midnight
  • Sunday: 8 am to midnight

Step by step: metro from DXB to Downtown Dubai

  1. After customs, follow the signs for the Metro (Terminal 1 or 3).
  2. Buy a Nol card at the ticket office or machine.
  3. Take the Red Line heading into the city (south-west, away from Centrepoint). Check the screens and the line map: you want trains heading towards Downtown and Dubai Marina.
  4. Get off at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. An air-conditioned walkway (about 10–15 minutes) connects it to the Dubai Mall.

Good to know: each passenger may bring a limited amount of luggage on the metro (in practice, one large and one small bag), and trains are packed with commuters at rush hour. If your hotel is more than a 10-minute walk from a station, a taxi is usually the better choice — Dubai’s heat and long distances between stations make “short walks” surprisingly tiring.

Dubai Airport taxi: price and tips

Official RTA taxis (cream-coloured, with different roof colours) wait outside every terminal. They’re metered, safe and accept cards in most cars.

  • Start fare from the airport: AED 25 (source), then the meter runs. Rates are a little higher at night.
  • Dubai Airport to Downtown / Dubai Mall: about AED 70, around 30 minutes (source).
  • Dubai Airport to Palm Jumeirah / Atlantis: about AED 130–140.
  • Dubai Airport to Deira or Bur Dubai: usually the cheapest rides, as they’re very close to the airport.
  • Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina: it’s about 35 km, so expect a fare well above the Downtown price — our estimate is roughly AED 110–150, depending on traffic.

Taxis take up to 4 passengers; ask for a 7-seater (minivan) at the taxi rank if you’re a family of five or more. Tipping isn’t required, but rounding up is appreciated.

Careem and Uber from Dubai Airport

Ride-hailing works well in Dubai. Expect roughly AED 35–75 with Careem and AED 45–85 with Uber to the city centre (source), depending on the car type and demand. Pick-ups are usually from the Departures level. Compare the app price with a regular taxi — at quiet times, the taxi is often similar or cheaper.

Dubai Airport by bus

RTA buses 401 and 402 run from the airport to the bus stations in Deira and Bur Dubai for about AED 5, roughly 5:30 am to 11:30 pm (source). They’re the cheapest option if you’re staying in Old Dubai with a small bag, but not practical for Downtown, the Marina or the Palm.

Private transfers

A pre-booked transfer costs from about AED 120–130 for a sedan (up to 3 people) and around AED 200 for a minivan, with fixed prices and a driver waiting in arrivals (source). Many include 60–90 minutes of free waiting time if your flight is late. It’s the stress-free choice for late-night arrivals, families with car seats and anyone heading to the Palm.

Best way from Dubai Airport to each area

Going to Best option Why
Downtown Dubai / Burj Khalifa Taxi (about AED 70) or metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Close and easy

Dubai Marina / JBR Taxi or transfer; metro on a budget (long ride) About 35 km away
Palm Jumeirah Taxi (about AED 130–140) or transfer No metro on the Palm
Deira / Bur Dubai Metro, bus or a short taxi Right next to the airport
Jumeirah beaches Taxi or Careem No metro nearby

Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah

Some travellers fly into Dubai and continue to Abu Dhabi (about 1.5 hours by road) or Sharjah (much closer). For Abu Dhabi, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the simplest option with luggage; intercity buses also run from central Dubai bus stations. For Sharjah, a taxi is usually quickest — check traffic, as the Dubai–Sharjah road is very busy at rush hour.

Tips for arriving in Dubai

  • Get online straight away: a UAE eSIM lets you order a Careem or check metro routes as soon as you land.
  • Cash isn’t essential: cards work almost everywhere, but a few dirhams are useful for the abra boats and small souk shops.
  • Dress comfortably and modestly for the trip in — the metro and malls are air-conditioned and cool.
  • Arriving between midnight and 5 am: the metro is closed (except a little later on Friday nights), so take a taxi or pre-book a transfer.
  • Insurance: medical care in the UAE is excellent but expensive — compare travel insurance for Dubai.

Getting back to Dubai Airport

Allow 3 hours before an international flight. Check your terminal: Emirates uses Terminal 3, while flydubai mostly uses Terminal 2 (no metro). From Downtown, the metro to Terminal 1 or 3 takes about 25–30 minutes; a taxi takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. Many airlines also offer city check-in — ask at your hotel.
