Quick answer: The JETT bus leaves Amman (Abdali) at about 6:30am and reaches Petra around 10:00–10:30, returning at about 5pm. Driving takes about 3 hours on the Desert Highway or 4–4.5 hours on the scenic King’s Highway. A private taxi or driver costs considerably more but lets you stop on the way.

Petra is about 235 km south of Amman. Queen Alia International Airport is on the way, so you can drive straight from the airport.
