Quick answer: from Madrid-Barajas Airport to the city, the cheapest options are the Cercanías C-1 train from Terminal 4 (about €2.60, no airport supplement) and Metro line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios (about 15–20 minutes; a single ticket plus the €3 airport supplement, or a combined €6 airport ticket). The Exprés Aeropuerto bus 203 runs 24/7 to Cibeles and Atocha for a flat €5. A taxi costs a fixed €33 to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road.

Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is about 12 km north-east of the city centre and very well connected. Depending on your terminal, budget and destination, the best option changes — and the Metro has a hidden airport supplement many visitors don’t expect.

Cercanías C-1 train (Terminal 4)

If you land at T4, the commuter train is the best deal: about €2.60 with no airport supplement, reaching Chamartín in about 12 minutes and Atocha in about 25 (source).
