Terraced vineyards in the Douro Valley

Douro Valley day trip from Porto: train, tour or car (2026)

How to plan a Douro Valley day trip from Porto: the scenic train to Pinhão, guided tours with wine tastings, or driving yourself.

Updated October 27, 2026 · 2 min read
Quick answer: For the easiest scenic trip, take the train from São Bento to Pinhão (about 2h20, around €17 each way). For wine tastings without driving, book a guided tour (about €55–75 with lunch and tastings often extra or included). The best months are May–June and September–October (harvest).

The Douro Valley is a UNESCO-listed wine region of terraced vineyards along the Douro River, about 100–120 km east of Porto. It is where port wine grapes are grown.

Three ways to visit

Option Price Pros Cons
Train to Pinhão ~€17 each way Scenic riverside line, cheap Limited departures; plan around the last train back (~6pm)
Guided tour €55–75+ Tastings, boat ride, no driving Fixed schedule, group size
Rental car €40–70/day + fuel Total freedom, miradouros Winding roads; the driver can’t drink

By train

Trains leave from São Bento (or Campanhã) on the Douro line. The best views start after Peso da Régua, where the track hugs the river. Sit on the right-hand side going east. Buy tickets at the station or on the CP website; check the return timetable first.

In Pinhão you can walk to quintas such as Quinta do Bomfim for a tasting, or take a one-hour river cruise.

By guided tour

Most tours include two quinta visits with tastings, a boat ride and lunch. Small-group tours are worth the extra euros.

When to go

  • May–June: green terraces, pleasant temperatures.
  • September–October: harvest season, golden colours, grape-treading at some quintas.
  • July–August: very hot inland (often 35°C+).
  • Winter: quiet; some quintas close or reduce hours.

Should you stay overnight?

A day trip works, but a night at a quinta lets you see the valley at sunset and avoids the rush for the last train.
