Dubai packs an incredible amount into a small trip: the world’s tallest building, a 1,000-year-old trading creek, golden desert dunes, white beaches and some of the biggest malls on earth. The challenge is distance — the city stretches for more than 50 km along the coast, so a good Dubai itinerary groups sights by area to avoid hours in taxis.
This day-by-day plan works for a first visit of 3, 4 or 5 days, with a realistic timetable, prices in dirhams (AED), Google Maps routes, and versions for families with kids and travellers on a budget. It also covers the best time to visit Dubai, the dress code and what’s closed right now (the Museum of the Future is being refitted until 2027).

Day 1: Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa
Morning: Dubai Frame
9:00 – Dubai Frame (about AED 48–53, source). This giant golden picture frame in Zabeel Park has a glass-floored bridge 150 metres up, with “old Dubai” on one side and the new skyline on the other — a great introduction to the city.
Midday: the Dubai Mall
11:30 – The Dubai Mall. Even if you don’t like shopping, it’s a sight in itself: the huge Dubai Aquarium tank (free to see from the mall), the indoor waterfall, the gold souk section and an ice rink. Have lunch overlooking the fountain lake. It’s also the perfect place to escape the midday heat.
Afternoon: Burj Khalifa
16:00 or 20:00 – At the Top, Burj Khalifa. Book online: about AED 160–190 outside prime hours or about AED 250 at sunset. A sunset slot is magical; an after-8 pm slot is cheaper and shows the city lights. All the details are in our Burj Khalifa tickets guide.
Evening: Dubai Fountain
From 18:00 – Dubai Fountain shows, free, every 30 minutes until 23:00 (source). Watch from the promenade or the Souk Al Bahar bridge, then have dinner in Downtown.

Day 2: Old Dubai, the Creek and the souks
Morning: Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
9:30 – Al Fahidi. Wander the sand-coloured lanes and wind towers of the old Bastakiya quarter, with small galleries, cafés and cultural centres. It’s the best place to imagine Dubai before the oil boom. Nearest metro: Sharaf DG or Al Ghubaiba.
Midday: abra ride and the souks
11:00 – Cross Dubai Creek by abra, the traditional wooden water taxi, for about AED 1 (source). It’s one of the best-value experiences in the city.
11:15 – Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira. Bargain for saffron, dates and frankincense, then admire the windows of the Gold Souk. Opening hours are usually about 10:00–22:00 Saturday–Thursday and from 16:00 on Fridays, and some shops close for a midday break (source). Tip: in the Gold Souk, the gold price is fixed by weight — only the making charge is negotiable.
13:30 – Lunch in Deira or back in Bur Dubai: try shawarma, grilled fish or an Emirati breakfast-style meal.
Afternoon and evening: Al Seef and a dhow cruise
16:30 – Al Seef, a creekside promenade designed to look like old Dubai, with cafés and shops.
19:00 – Dhow dinner cruise on the Creek — about two hours with a buffet and entertainment (source). Compare Dubai dhow cruises.

Day 3: Jumeirah beaches and a desert safari
Morning: Jumeirah and the Burj Al Arab
9:00 – Jumeirah Mosque (from outside, or join a guided visit if available), then Kite Beach or Jumeirah Public Beach for a swim with views of the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab. Beaches are free.
12:00 – Souk Madinat Jumeirah for lunch among Arabian-style canals and wind towers.
Afternoon and evening: desert safari
About 15:00 – Pick-up for an evening desert safari. A shared evening safari costs about AED 210–253 and usually includes dune bashing in a 4×4, sandboarding, a camel ride, henna, a BBQ dinner and shows at a desert camp; quad biking is often extra (source). You’re back at your hotel late in the evening. It’s one of the highlights of any trip to Dubai — book 24–48 hours ahead in peak season. Compare every option in our desert safari Dubai guide.
Not keen on bumpy dune drives? Choose a “no dune bashing” option or a morning safari (about AED 104, around 4 hours).

Day 4: Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and JBR
Morning: Palm Jumeirah
10:00 – Palm Jumeirah. Ride the Palm Monorail along the trunk of the island for views of the fronds, and visit the area around Atlantis The Palm (its Aquaventure waterpark and Lost Chambers aquarium are paid). Many visitors also enjoy the Palm’s beach clubs.
Afternoon: Dubai Marina and JBR
14:00 – JBR beach for a swim, then a walk along The Walk at JBR and the Dubai Marina Walk (a 7 km promenade, free). Consider a short boat tour or yacht cruise around the Marina in the late afternoon.
Evening: Global Village (October–May)
19:00 – Global Village, a huge open-air festival park with pavilions from around the world, street food and shows. Season 31 opens on 14 October 2026 and runs until May 2027, from 4 pm to midnight Monday–Thursday and until 1 am at weekends. Last season tickets were about AED 25 on weekdays and AED 30 at weekends (Khaleej Times). It’s about 30 minutes by taxi from the Marina.

Dubai itinerary for 3 days
Only have three days in Dubai? Keep Day 1 and Day 2, then on Day 3 spend the morning at JBR or Kite Beach and take the evening desert safari. Skip the Palm (or see it from a taxi on the way to the beach). This is the classic “Dubai in 3 days” route.
Dubai itinerary for 5 days: add Abu Dhabi
With a fifth day, take a day trip to Abu Dhabi (about 1.5 hours by road): the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (one of the most beautiful mosques in the world, with a strict dress code) and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, or Ferrari World and Yas Island for families. See Abu Dhabi day trips from Dubai.
Dubai itinerary for 6–7 days
- A relaxing beach or pool day.
- The Dubai Miracle Garden (seasonal, usually in the cooler months) or the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
- A trip to Hatta in the mountains, or Sharjah’s museums and heritage area.
- A day at a waterpark: Aquaventure or Wild Wadi.
Dubai itinerary with kids
- Day 1: Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, KidZania in the Dubai Mall, and the evening fountain show.
- Day 2: the abra ride and souks in the morning (kids love the boats), pool in the afternoon.
- Day 3: a gentle morning desert safari or a family-friendly evening camp.
- Day 4: Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis, then JBR beach and its playground.
Plan indoor activities between 12 and 4 pm — the heat is strong even in winter. A family hotel at JBR or on the Palm makes beach time easy; see where to stay in Dubai with family.
Dubai on a budget: free things to do in Dubai
Is Dubai expensive? It can be, but many of the best experiences are free or almost free:
- The Dubai Fountain shows and the Dubai Mall (including views of the giant aquarium).
- Public beaches: Kite Beach, JBR, Jumeirah Public Beach and La Mer.
- Al Fahidi, the souks and Al Seef.
- The abra across the Creek for about AED 1.
- Dubai Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR.
- Getting around by metro (AED 3–8.50 per trip with a Nol card) instead of taxis.

Best time to visit Dubai
Month-by-month weather and prices are in our full guide to the best time to visit Dubai.
- November to March: the best weather — warm days, cool evenings. Also the busiest and most expensive season.
- October and April: hot but manageable, with better prices.
- May to September: very hot (often 40–45°C) and humid; hotel prices drop a lot, and you’ll spend most of the day indoors or in the pool.
- Ramadan: in 2027 it’s expected to start around early February (the exact date depends on the moon). Dubai is open as usual, but some restaurants change their hours and the atmosphere is calmer by day and festive at night.
Dubai dress code and etiquette
- Malls, souks and public places: cover shoulders and knees. Light, loose clothes are best.
- Beaches and pools: swimwear is fine, but cover up when you leave the beach.
- Mosques: women need to cover their hair, arms and legs; men should wear long trousers.
- Alcohol: only in licensed venues, mostly hotels, bars and clubs. Never drink in public.
- Behaviour: avoid public displays of affection and don’t photograph people without permission.
- Weekend: in the UAE, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
Getting around Dubai
Use the metro for Downtown, Old Dubai and the Marina; taxis or Careem for the beaches, the Palm and evenings; and the tram around the Marina and JBR. Arriving soon? Read Dubai Airport to the city for every transfer option. A UAE eSIM makes ride-hailing and maps easy.
