Quick answer: the fastest way from Sydney Airport to the city is the train: about 13 minutes to Central and 18–26 minutes to Circular Quay. You pay the normal fare plus a station access fee of AU$18.61 (adult) — roughly AU$21–23 in total to Central. The cheapest option is bus 420 to Mascot and the train from there (about AU$5–8). A taxi to the CBD has a fixed fare of AU$60; Uber costs about AU$35–55. Just tap on with a contactless card — no Opal card needed.

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is only about 8 km south of the city centre, and getting into town is easy. The question is how much you want to pay: the airport train is quick but carries a hefty access fee, while a bus-plus-train combination costs a fraction of the price.

This guide compares every way to get from Sydney Airport to the city in 2026 — train, bus, taxi, rideshare and shuttle — and explains how to pay with Opal or contactless. Fares come from Transport for NSW and Sydney Tourism’s transfer guide (checked 22 October 2026).

Option 1: the airport train

Trains on the T8 Airport & South Line run frequently from about 5 a.m. to midnight from both the International and Domestic stations (source).

  • Journey times: Central about 13 minutes; Circular Quay about 18–26 minutes; Wynyard and Town Hall about 21–31 minutes (source).
  • Station access fee: AU$18.61 for adults, AU$16.64 for children and concessions, charged on top of the fare (source).
  • Weekly cap: the access fee is capped at AU$37.75 per week for adults, so frequent airport trips cost less.
  • Groups: for three or four people, a taxi or Uber can be cheaper than the train.

Option 2: bus 420 + train (cheapest)

Take route 420 from the airport to Mascot Station, then a normal train to the city (about 8 minutes to Central). Because you avoid the airport stations, there’s no access fee: the total is about AU$5–8 (source). It’s slower and less comfortable with big luggage, but the saving is huge.

Option 3: taxi, Uber and shuttles

  • Taxi: a fixed fare of AU$60 to the designated CBD area, including airport charges and tolls; maxi taxis AU$80 (source).
  • Rideshare: Uber or DiDi standard rides cost about AU$35–55, with surge pricing at busy times (source).
  • Shared shuttle: about AU$22–28 per person, door to door in 40–60 minutes.
  • Private transfer: from about AU$95 for a sedan. Compare airport transfers and car hire.

How to pay: Opal card or contactless

You don’t need to buy an Opal card. Simply tap on and off with a contactless credit or debit card, or a phone wallet, on trains, buses, ferries, Metro and light rail. Fares and caps are the same as with Opal (source).

Opal / contactless cap (adult) Amount
Daily cap, Monday–Thursday AU$19.30
Daily cap, Friday–Sunday and public holidays AU$9.65
Weekly cap AU$50.00

Source: Sydney Tourism Opal guide (checked 22 October 2026). The airport station access fee is not included in these caps.

  • Off-peak discount: 30% off trains, Metro, buses and light rail outside weekday peaks (6:30–10 a.m. and 3–7 p.m., Monday–Thursday) — ferries have no off-peak discount (source).
  • Weekends are cheap: with the AU$9.65 Friday–Sunday cap, a ferry to Manly or a trip to the Blue Mountains costs almost nothing.
  • Children: under-4s travel free; ages 4–15 pay child fares.
  • Use the same card for every trip so caps apply.
