New York is fast, exciting and full of iconic places you already know from films. It is expensive, but many great experiences are free. Plan four to six days.

Top things to do in New York

  1. Central Park — rent a bike or simply walk from the Mall to Bethesda Fountain.
  2. Statue of Liberty — book official ferry tickets early, or ride the free Staten Island Ferry for views.
  3. Top of the Rock or Edge — the best skyline views, especially at sunset.
  4. Brooklyn Bridge — walk across from Manhattan to DUMBO for the classic photo.
  5. The High Line — a park built on an old railway, ending at Hudson Yards.
  6. A Broadway show — use the TKTS booth or digital lotteries for cheaper tickets.

The most popular sights sell out in high season, so check skip-the-line tickets and guided tours in New York a few days before you go — most can be cancelled for free.

Where to stay in New York

Choosing the right area makes a big difference. Here are our favourite neighbourhoods — whatever your budget, compare hotel prices in New York and pick a room with free cancellation.

  • Midtown — close to Times Square and most attractions.
  • Lower Manhattan — quieter in the evening, near the Statue of Liberty ferries.
  • Brooklyn (Williamsburg/DUMBO) — trendy, with skyline views and lower prices.
  • Long Island City — good value, one subway stop from Manhattan.

Getting around

The subway runs 24/7. Tap your contactless card or phone with OMNY — fares are capped after a set number of rides each week. From JFK, take the AirTrain plus subway or LIRR; from Newark, the AirTrain plus NJ Transit.
