Seeing the Grand Canyon is a highlight of many Las Vegas trips. But “the Grand Canyon” means different places, at very different distances. Here’s how to choose.
West Rim vs South Rim vs helicopter
| West Rim (Grand Canyon West) | South Rim (National Park) | Helicopter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive from Vegas | ~2.5 h each way | ~4.5 h each way | Flights from the Vegas area |
| Managed by | The Hualapai Tribe | The National Park Service | Tour operators |
| Entry | Packages (Skywalk optional) | $35 per vehicle + $100 per non-resident aged 16+ | Included in the tour price |
| Highlights | The Skywalk, Eagle Point, Guano Point | The classic vast views, Mather Point, the rim trails | Hoover Dam and Lake Mead from the air, a canyon landing on some tours |
| Best for | A single day trip, the Skywalk | The “real” canyon views, ideally with an overnight | Short on time, special occasions |
The national park fees are from ABC17 / Stacker (January 2026). Check West Rim package prices on the official Grand Canyon West website before you go.
The West Rim and Skywalk
The West Rim is on Hualapai tribal land, outside the national park, so the national park surcharge doesn’t apply. Entry is sold as packages, with the Skywalk (a glass U-shaped bridge over a 4,000-foot drop) as an add-on. Personal phones and cameras aren’t allowed on the Skywalk itself. Many tours stop at the Hoover Dam on the way.
The South Rim
This is the Grand Canyon of the postcards, with endless layered views from Mather Point, Yavapai Point and the Rim Trail. From Las Vegas, it’s a very long day of 9+ hours of driving in total. It’s better to stay a night in Tusayan or the park, and combine it with Route 66 towns or Sedona.
Helicopter and plane tours
Helicopter flights over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, sometimes landing in the canyon, make a 3–4 hour excursion. They’re expensive, but unforgettable. Book with reputable operators and check the weight and seating rules.

FAQ: Grand Canyon from Las Vegas
Which part of the Grand Canyon is closest to Las Vegas?
The West Rim, about 2.5 hours by road. The South Rim is about 4.5 hours away.
Do foreign visitors pay more at the Grand Canyon?
At Grand Canyon National Park (South and North Rims), yes. Since 1 January 2026, non-residents aged 16+ pay a $100 surcharge per person on top of the standard entry fee. The West Rim is run by the Hualapai Tribe and has its own pricing.
Is the Grand Canyon Skywalk worth it?
It’s a thrilling experience, but pricey, and you can’t take your own photos on the glass. The views from Guano Point and the South Rim are arguably better.
