Las Vegas runs at full speed all year, but the desert weather and the event calendar change what you’ll pay and what you can do. Here’s a season-by-season guide.
Las Vegas by season
| Season | Typical highs | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 20–33°C | Pools opening, Red Rock, canyon trips | Spring break and festival weekends |
| Summer (Jun–Sep) | 38–43°C+ | Pool parties, indoor shows, deals midweek | Dangerous heat for hikes |
| Autumn (Oct–Nov) | 20–30°C | The ideal all-rounder | Major events and conventions |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 14–18°C | Shows, dining, lower midweek prices | Cold nights, many pools closed, New Year prices |
Spring: the sweet spot
Comfortable temperatures make March to May perfect for walking the Strip, hiking Red Rock Canyon and visiting the Grand Canyon. Pool season gets going, but so do festivals and spring-break crowds, so book weekends early.
Summer: hot, hot, hot
Daytime heat regularly passes 40°C (104°F). Spend the days at the pool or indoors, and go out after dark. Midweek hotel deals can be excellent. Drink lots of water, and never hike in the midday heat.
Autumn: our favourite
October and November bring warm days, cooler nights and great conditions for desert trips. The calendar is busy with conventions and big sporting events, which can push prices up, so check dates before booking.
Winter: cool and good value
Winter days are mild and sunny, but nights can be near freezing. Many pools close or open only partly. Outside New Year’s Eve and major conventions in January, midweek prices can be among the year’s lowest.
Tips for timing your trip
- Check the city’s convention calendar. A huge trade show can double hotel rates.
- Sunday to Thursday nights are almost always cheaper than weekends.
- Compare all-in prices, including resort fees.
- Compare flights to Las Vegas and hotel prices for your dates.
