Sukhumvit — best for first-timers and nightlife
Bangkok’s busiest strip of hotels, malls (Terminal 21, EmQuartier), restaurants and rooftop bars. Asok is the BTS–MRT interchange, so you can get anywhere (source). Downsides: far from the temples, heavy traffic, and red-light areas around Nana and Soi Cowboy.
- Park 19 Hotel — good value near Asok.
- Tastoria Collection Sukhumvit — upscale.
- Upmarket Thonglor and Phrom Phong are great for trendy bars and restaurants.
Silom and Sathorn — best central base
Central and well connected by BTS and MRT, with Lumpini Park, cafés and rooftop bars; quieter at night than Sukhumvit (source).
- Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park — park views.
- Tiang Capsule — budget.
Riverside — best for views and temples
Luxury hotels on the Chao Phraya, sunset views and boats to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Boats stop in the evening, so getting back late can be harder (source).
- Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok — views of Wat Arun.
- Ten Six Hundred Chao Phraya Bangkok — mid-range.
- Baan Wanglang Riverside — budget-friendly.
Siam and Pratunam — best for shopping and families
Huge malls (Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, MBK), food courts and the BTS interchange at Siam — great for rainy days and families (source).
- Pathumwan Princess Hotel — connected to MBK.
- VELA be Siam — mid-range.
Old Town (Rattanakosin) and Banglamphu — best for temples
Walk to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho; peaceful in the evening, but touristy by day and with persistent tuk-tuk drivers. Banglamphu, around Khao San Road, is the backpacker hub (source).

Chinatown — best for street food
Yaowarat’s night market, historic shophouses and cocktail bars, with two MRT stations and the express boat nearby; loud and hectic at night (source).
Ari — best for a local stay
Leafy streets, specialty coffee and co-working spaces, about 20 minutes from the centre by BTS — ideal for longer stays (source).
