Cancún works best as a base: beach days in the Hotel Zone mixed with day trips to islands, Mayan ruins and cenotes. This itinerary balances both, with realistic travel times and 2026 prices. Alternate busy and easy days so you don’t spend your whole holiday on a bus.
5-day Cancún itinerary at a glance
| Day | Plan | Main costs (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hotel Zone beaches, El Rey ruins, lagoon sunset | R-1 bus about 12 MXN |
| 2 | Isla Mujeres: Playa Norte, golf cart, Punta Sur | Ferry 110–120 MXN each way; cart 600–1,000 MXN |
| 3 | Chichén Itzá, cenote Ik Kil, Valladolid | Entry 697 MXN; tours from about US$49 |
| 4 | Tulum ruins and Jaguar Park, cenote, Playa del Carmen | Ruins + park 265 MXN |
| 5 | Snorkel (MUSA or Puerto Morelos) or beach; dinner downtown | Tour prices vary |
Day 1: Hotel Zone beaches
Recover from the flight on the beach. In the morning, swim at calm Playa Langosta or Playa Tortugas (km 5–6.5). After lunch, take the R-1 bus to Playa Delfines (km 17.5) for the famous view and the CANCÚN sign, and walk around the small El Rey ruins opposite. Watch the sunset from a restaurant on the lagoon side, since the sea side faces east.
Tip: buy a Mexico eSIM before you arrive to use maps and ride-hailing apps — compare Mexico eSIMs.
Day 2: Isla Mujeres
Take the R-1 to Puerto Juárez and the UltraMar ferry (110–120 MXN one way, 15–20 minutes, every 30–60 minutes). On the island, rent a golf cart (600–1,000 MXN a day) and drive to Punta Sur, the cliffs at the southern tip. Spend the afternoon at Playa Norte, one of the clearest beaches in the region, and stay for sunset — this beach faces west. The last ferries return late in the evening; check the time on the day.
Day 3: Chichén Itzá, a cenote and Valladolid
A long but unforgettable day. Join an early tour or drive yourself and leave by 6:00 to reach Chichén Itzá at the 8:00 opening (entry 697 MXN for foreigners). Spend 2–3 hours at the site, swim in Cenote Ik Kil, then have lunch in colonial Valladolid. Full details: Chichén Itzá from Cancún.
Day 4: Tulum ruins and cenotes
Head south (about 2 hours by car, or about US$20–25 by ADO bus). Visit the Tulum ruins on the cliff early; since July 2026 foreigners pay 265 MXN for Jaguar Park and the archaeological zone (source). Cool off in a cenote on the way back — Gran Cenote near Tulum or the cenotes around Puerto Aventuras — and stop in Playa del Carmen for dinner on Quinta Avenida.
Prefer not to drive? Compare Tulum and cenote tours from Cancún.
Day 5: Snorkelling or a lazy day
Choose a morning snorkel at the underwater museum (MUSA) or the protected reef at Puerto Morelos, or simply enjoy your hotel. In the evening, go downtown: Mercado 28 for souvenirs and Parque de las Palapas for tacos and marquesitas at local prices. Before your flight, pay the Visitax online.
If you have 3 days
- Day 1: Hotel Zone beaches and Playa Delfines.
- Day 2: Isla Mujeres.
- Day 3: Chichén Itzá or Tulum — pick one.
If you have 7 days
- Follow days 1–5 above.
- Day 6: Xcaret or Xel-Há eco-park — a full day; book online for a lower price than at the gate.
- Day 7: Ruta de los Cenotes and the town of Puerto Morelos, or a night on Isla Mujeres or in Valladolid to see them without day-trippers.
