Seasons explained
High season: December to April
Blue skies, low humidity and calm seas make this the best weather of the year. It’s also the most expensive: Christmas week (about 20 December to 5 January) and spring break (mid-March to early April) have the highest hotel prices. Book flights and hotels 2–3 months ahead. Compare Cancún hotel prices for your dates.
Shoulder season: May and November
The best value. May is hot with the first rains and rising seaweed; November is drying out, the seaweed has mostly gone, and prices are still well below Christmas levels.
Low season: June to October
Hot, humid and rainy, with short afternoon storms rather than all-day rain in most weeks. Prices drop sharply, especially in August and September. This is also hurricane season, so choose flexible bookings and travel insurance.
Sargassum (seaweed) season
Sargassum is a brown seaweed that drifts in from the Atlantic and piles up on east-facing beaches. It’s harmless to touch in the water but smells when it rots on the sand.
- Clearest months: January–March and November–December.
- Worst months: June to August. June 2026 set an all-time record for the Caribbean.
- Least affected beaches: Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres and the north (bay) side of the Hotel Zone, which face away from the current. Tulum and Playa del Carmen are usually hit earlier and harder than Cancún.
- Daily changes: conditions can change within 24 hours, so check a live sargassum map a few days before you go.
If you must travel in summer, choose a hotel on the north side of the Hotel Zone, in Playa Mujeres or on Isla Mujeres — see where to stay in Cancún.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest risk in September and October. Direct hits on Cancún are rare, but storms can cancel flights and close beaches for a few days. In these months:
- Book refundable or flexible rates.
- Take travel insurance that covers trip interruption — compare travel insurance for Mexico. Read do you need travel insurance?
- Follow your hotel’s instructions; large resorts have hurricane plans and shelters.
Events and holidays
- Spring break (March) — the Hotel Zone fills with students; avoid it for a quiet trip.
- Spring equinox (around 20–21 March) — the “serpent” shadow appears on the Chichén Itzá pyramid; expect huge crowds.
- Day of the Dead (1–2 November) — altars and events, and Xcaret holds a large festival.
- Whale-shark season (June–September) — the main reason to choose summer.
