Best Time to Visit Amsterdam: Tulips, Weather by Month & Events

When to visit Amsterdam: tulip season and Keukenhof, weather and crowds month by month, King’s Day, Pride and the Light Festival, plus the cheapest months.

Updated October 25, 2026 · 3 min read
Quick answer: the best time to visit Amsterdam is mid-April to May for tulips and spring weather, or June and September for long, mild days. April is busy, especially around King’s Day (27 April). Summer (July–August) is the warmest (about 22–23°C) and the most crowded. November–March is cheapest and quietest; December brings the Amsterdam Light Festival. Rain is possible in any month.

Amsterdam’s maritime climate is mild but changeable: cool summers, damp winters and showers all year. The best month depends on whether you want tulips, festivals, canal terraces or low prices. This guide goes through the year.

Amsterdam weather and crowds by month

Month Average high (approx.) Highlights Crowds
January 6°C Light Festival (until mid-Jan), museums Low
February 7°C Quiet canals, cheap hotels Low
March 10°C Keukenhof opens (18 March 2027) Medium
April 14°C Tulip peak, King’s Day (27 April) Very high

November 10°C Quiet, Light Festival starts late month Low
December 7°C Light Festival, Christmas markets Medium

Temperatures are typical averages; bring a rain jacket in every season.

Spring (March–May): tulip season

The most popular time of year. Keukenhof is open from 18 March to 9 May 2027, and tulips usually peak in early to mid-April — see Keukenhof tickets. On King’s Day (27 April), the whole city turns orange with street markets and boat parties; it’s great fun but hotels sell out months ahead. On 4–5 May, the Netherlands remembers the war dead and celebrates Liberation Day.

Summer (June–August)

Long days (sunset around 22:00 in June), café terraces and festivals, including Pride Amsterdam with the Canal Parade in early August. Expect the highest hotel prices and busy museums; book the Anne Frank House early — see how tickets work.

Autumn (September–November)

September is one of the best months: mild weather and fewer tourists after the summer. October brings autumn colours and the Amsterdam Dance Event, when hotels fill with music fans. November is grey and quiet, with low prices.

Winter (December–February)

Cold, damp and dark early, but cosy: the Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the canals from late November to mid-January, and museums and brown cafés are at their best. In very cold winters, canals occasionally freeze.
