Alcatraz Island was a military fort and then, from 1934 to 1963, a maximum-security federal prison that held Al Capone. Today it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

How to avoid sold-out dates
- Book as soon as your dates are fixed; summer and weekends sell out 10+ days ahead.
- Choose an early ferry for fewer crowds.
- If sold out, check combo tours that include Alcatraz, or try early in the morning for released tickets.
On the island
- The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes.
- The cellhouse audio tour, narrated by former guards and inmates, is the highlight.
- Allow 2.5–3 hours in total. The walk up to the cellhouse is steep.
- Bring layers: it’s windy. Food isn’t sold on the island.
FAQ: Alcatraz tickets
How far in advance should I book Alcatraz?
Two to four weeks in general, and earlier for summer, holidays and night tours.
Is the Alcatraz night tour worth it?
Yes, if you can get it: it’s less crowded, atmospheric and includes talks not offered by day.
Can you visit Alcatraz without a ticket?
No. The only way onto the island is the official ferry.
