Quick answer: Walking the bridge is free (2.7 km each way, about 30–40 minutes). The best viewpoints are Battery Spencer (north side), Crissy Field, Fort Point and Baker Beach. Driving south into the city costs a toll, charged electronically.

Opened in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the strait between San Francisco and Marin County. Its colour is officially “International Orange”.

Walking across

Pedestrians use the east sidewalk, generally open during daylight hours. Start at the Welcome Center on the south side. It’s windy and noisy, so bring a jacket. Many people walk to the middle and back; continuing to Vista Point on the north side takes about 40 minutes.

Cycling to Sausalito

A classic half-day: rent a bike near Fisherman’s Wharf, ride along Crissy Field, cross the bridge and descend to Sausalito, then return by ferry.
