Quick answer: for a Toledo day trip from Madrid, take the Avant train from Atocha (about 33 minutes, around €11 each way) or the ALSA bus from Plaza Elíptica (about 1 hour, around €6.40 one way). In Toledo, see the Cathedral (€12), buy the Pulsera Turística (€14 for seven monuments, including El Greco’s masterpiece at Santo Tomé), wander the Jewish Quarter and end at the Mirador del Valle at sunset. Segovia, with its Roman aqueduct and fairy-tale Alcázar, is about 28 minutes from Madrid by high-speed train.

Toledo, the “City of Three Cultures”, is one of Spain’s most beautiful historic cities: a UNESCO World Heritage old town on a hill, wrapped by the River Tagus, where Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritage meet. It’s also the easiest day trip from Madrid. Segovia, to the north, is the perfect second day trip.
