Quick answer: from Cancún airport (CUN) to the Hotel Zone, a shared shuttle costs about US$18 per person, an official taxi about US$30–46 per car (fixed price, paid at the kiosk), and a private transfer a little more. The cheapest option is the ADO bus to downtown (about 140 pesos), then the R-1 bus into the Hotel Zone (about 12 pesos). The ride is 20–30 minutes.

Cancún International Airport is about 20 km south of the Hotel Zone and 15 km from downtown. Arrivals are famous for timeshare sellers who pretend to be transport staff, so it helps to know your plan before you land. Prices below are 2026 figures from The Better Vacation (updated July 2026) and other sources linked in the text.

All options compared

Rental car Varies 20–30 min Day trips to ruins and cenotes

Shared shuttle

Shuttle vans wait outside each terminal and drop passengers at their hotels one by one. At about US$18 per person to the Hotel Zone or downtown, it’s the best value for one or two people. Shuttles run roughly 8:00–20:00; for a late flight, book a private transfer instead. You can also book a shuttle to Puerto Morelos (about US$25), Playa del Carmen (about US$36) or Tulum (about US$70–79).

Official airport taxi

Airport taxis have fixed prices by zone: about US$30–46 per car to the Hotel Zone. Pay at the official kiosk inside the terminal, not to someone in the arrivals hall. Taxis are expensive for one person but good for three or four.

Private transfer

A driver meets you with a name sign and takes you straight to your hotel. Book it in advance and you’ll walk past the sales desks with a plan. It’s the easiest choice for families with luggage and car seats. Compare Cancún airport transfers.

ADO bus (the cheapest option)

ADO buses leave from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 every 30–60 minutes during the day:

  • Downtown Cancún (ADO station): about 140 MXN (about US$7).
  • Playa del Carmen: about 220 MXN (about US$11).
  • Tulum: about US$20–25.

The bus doesn’t go into the Hotel Zone. From the downtown station, take a taxi or walk to Avenida Tulum and catch the R-1 bus (about 12 MXN, 24 hours, every 5–10 minutes by day). Carry small peso notes; drivers often can’t give change.

Tren Maya

The Tren Maya has a station at Cancún airport, with trains along the coast towards Playa del Carmen and inland to Chichén Itzá and Mérida. It doesn’t go to the Hotel Zone. Since April 2026 foreigners pay the same tourist fare as Mexicans — for example 351 pesos from Cancún to Chichén Itzá (source). Check the timetable; there are only a few departures a day.

Rental car

A car is useful for cenotes, Chichén Itzá and Tulum, but you don’t need one in the Hotel Zone. Rental companies are off-site and send shuttles to the terminals. The online price often excludes Mexican third-party liability insurance, which is compulsory — read car rental mistakes to avoid before you book.

Uber and DiDi

Uber and DiDi work in Cancún and are usually cheaper than taxis inside the city. Airport pick-ups are still disputed by local taxi groups, and drivers may ask you to walk to a pick-up point outside the terminal. Uber Reserve lets you pre-book an airport pick-up up to 30 days ahead (source). For the smoothest arrival, a shuttle, official taxi or pre-booked transfer is still simplest.

Getting around Cancún

  • R-1 / R-2 buses: about 12–15 MXN, along the whole Hotel Zone and to downtown and Puerto Juárez (ferries to Isla Mujeres).
  • Taxis: agree the price before getting in; Hotel Zone fares are much higher than downtown.
  • Ferries: UltraMar to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez (110–120 MXN) or Hotel Zone piers (170–200 MXN).

Arrival tips

  1. Walk straight through the “shark tank” of desks after customs — they sell timeshares, not transport.
  2. Get pesos from a bank ATM inside the terminal; avoid the exchange counters’ rates.
  3. Have your hotel address with the km marker ready.
  4. Buy a Mexico eSIM before you fly so you can message your driver — compare Mexico eSIMs.
  5. Pay the Visitax online before your departure day; it’s checked at the airport.
