Quick answer: Zanzibar is Tanzania’s tropical island: white-sand beaches, turquoise water and the UNESCO-listed old town of Stone Town. Spend 1–2 nights in Stone Town and the rest on the beach: Nungwi or Kendwa in the north for all-day swimming, Paje on the east coast for kitesurfing. Most visitors need a Tanzania visa (e-visa, usually US$50, US$100 for US citizens) and the compulsory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance (US$44). The best months are June–October and December–February.

A week is ideal: 2 nights in Stone Town and 5 on the coast. Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society, so dress modestly away from the beach.
