Zanzibar Airport Transfers: Taxi Prices to Stone Town & Beaches

How to get from Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) to Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and other beaches: taxi and transfer prices, travel times, dala-dala buses and tips.

Updated October 25, 2026 · 2 min read
Quick answer: Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) is about 15–20 minutes from Stone Town. There’s no train or airport bus, so most visitors take a taxi or pre-booked transfer: roughly US$15–25 to Stone Town, US$40–60 to Nungwi or Kendwa and US$40–55 to Paje. Agree the price before you get in.

Typical transfer prices and times

Destination Time Taxi / private transfer
Stone Town 15–20 min US$15–25
Nungwi 1–1.5 h US$40–60
Kendwa 1–1.25 h US$40–60
Paje / Jambiani 1 h US$40–55
Matemwe / Kiwengwa 1 h US$40–55
Michamvi 1–1.25 h US$45–60

Prices are typical for 2026 and depend on vehicle size, the time of day and your bargaining. Hotel transfers may cost a little more but are the easiest option after a long flight.

Taxis at the airport

Licensed taxis wait outside arrivals at Terminal 3. Fares are negotiable; many drivers quote in US dollars. Confirm the price, the destination and whether it’s per car before you leave. Some ride-hailing apps operate on the island, but availability is patchy at the airport.

Pre-booked transfers

Booking a transfer through your hotel or a reputable company means a driver waiting with your name, a fixed price and no haggling. It’s worth it if you arrive at night or are heading straight to a beach on the north or east coast.

Dala-dala (local minibus)

Dala-dalas are the cheapest way around the island, but they don’t serve the terminal directly, are crowded and slow, and have little space for luggage. They’re fun later in your trip, not on arrival day.

From the ferry port

If you arrive by ferry from Dar es Salaam, the port is right in Stone Town. Many hotels are a short walk or quick taxi ride away. See Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry.

Tips

  • Have your e-visa (or visa fee in cash) and your Zanzibar insurance certificate ready before landing. See Tanzania visa and Zanzibar insurance.
  • Carry small US dollar notes (printed 2009 or later) for taxis.
  • Buy an eSIM before you fly, so you can message your driver.
  • Pick your beach first: where to stay in Zanzibar.
