Quick answer: Córdoba is just 45 minutes from Seville by high-speed train (AVE or Avant), making it an easy day trip. Start at the Mezquita-Cathedral, one of the world’s most extraordinary buildings, then explore the Jewish quarter, the Roman Bridge and the gardens of the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Book train tickets ahead for the best fares.

Getting there

Option Time Notes
High-speed train (AVE, Avant, low-cost operators) ~45 min Frequent; cheaper when booked early
Bus ~2 h Cheaper, slower
Car ~1.5 h Parking in the old town is limited

Trains leave from Seville Santa Justa. Book on Renfe or with the low-cost high-speed operators. Córdoba station is about 20–25 minutes’ walk from the Mezquita.

The Mezquita-Cathedral

Built as a great mosque from the 8th century, with a forest of more than 800 red-and-white striped arches, and later transformed by a Renaissance cathedral built into its centre. Buy tickets on the official site; allow about 1.5 hours. Early on many weekday mornings, a short window for individual visitors is free, outside services. Check current times before you go. The bell tower is a separate, timed ticket.

  • 9:00am: arrive and walk to the Mezquita.
  • 11:00am: the Jewish quarter (Judería): the Synagogue, Calleja de las Flores and small squares.
  • 12:30pm: lunch: try salmorejo, which comes from Córdoba, and flamenquín.
  • 2:00pm: Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and its terraced gardens.

When to go

May is magical, with the Patios Festival (Fiesta de los Patios), when private courtyards full of flowers open to the public. Summer is extremely hot, often hotter than Seville; go early and rest at midday.

Tips

  • Cover shoulders in the Mezquita-Cathedral.
  • Many sights close on Mondays or have shorter hours; check before you go.
  • With more time, add Medina Azahara, a ruined caliphate palace city outside Córdoba.
