Hong Kong has a subtropical climate, so humidity matters more than temperature. Here’s what each season is like.
Hong Kong by season
| Season | Typical highs | Highlights | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn (Oct–Nov) | 24–28°C | Clear Peak views, hiking, festivals | Busy hotel weeks during big events |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 17–21°C | Christmas lights, Chinese New Year, cool hikes | Chilly evenings, CNY shop closures |
| Spring (Mar–Apr) | 21–25°C | Rugby Sevens, Art Basel, mild weather | Fog, humidity, hidden views |
| Summer (May–Sep) | 29–32°C | Beaches, dragon boat races, sales | Heat, rainstorms, typhoons |
Autumn: the best weather
Low humidity and clear skies make October to early December perfect for Victoria Peak, the Dragon’s Back hike and harbour views.
Winter and Chinese New Year
Cool and dry, with Christmas light displays on the harbour. Chinese New Year (late January or February) brings a night parade and fireworks over Victoria Harbour, but some small shops close for a few days and hotels get busy.
Spring
Pleasant temperatures, but fog and haze can hide the skyline. March is busy with events such as Art Basel and the Rugby Sevens.
Summer and typhoons
Expect heavy showers and high humidity. When a typhoon signal No. 8 or higher is raised, transport and attractions close. Check the Hong Kong Observatory and keep your plans flexible. Summer has some of the best hotel deals.
