Arriving in Marrakech is easy if you know the fair prices. Most visitors stay in a riad in the medina, where cars can’t go, so the last few minutes are on foot. This guide compares the options with 2026 figures from AirConnect.
Options compared
| Option | Price (2026) | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus L19 | 30 MAD | 30–45 min | To Jemaa el-Fnaa; about every 30 min, 6:00–23:30; limited luggage space |
| Grand taxi (beige, fixed price) | About 120–150 MAD day, ~200 MAD night | 15–30 min | Agree the price before you get in |
| Petit taxi (small beige, metered) | About 70–100 MAD | 15–30 min | Insist on the meter |
| Pre-booked transfer | About 150–280 MAD | 15–30 min | Coordinated with your riad’s porter |
Arriving at a riad
Most of the medina is closed to cars. Taxis and transfers stop at the nearest gate — such as Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou or Bab Jdid — and a porter from your riad walks you through the alleys (5–15 minutes) with your luggage on a cart. Send your flight details to your riad in advance and ask them to arrange the transfer and porter; it’s the stress-free option, especially at night. Compare Marrakech airport transfers.
Avoiding taxi scams
- Use only official taxis from the rank outside arrivals; ignore drivers approaching you inside the terminal, who may charge 3–5 times the fair price.
- Agree the total price (in dirhams) before departure, including luggage.
- Have small notes ready — drivers often “have no change”.
- If someone offers to guide you to your riad in the medina, politely refuse unless they’re from the riad.
Money on arrival
The dirham is a closed currency, so you can’t get it before you travel. Withdraw from an ATM in the arrivals hall or exchange a small amount at the airport bureau for the taxi and tips.
Getting around Marrakech
- On foot: the best way to explore the medina — download an offline map.
- Petit taxis: for trips to Gueliz, Majorelle or the station; up to 3 passengers.
- Calèches: horse carriages near Koutoubia; agree the price and route first.
- Day trips: book tours with pickup for the Atlas Mountains and desert — see Sahara trips.
Tips
- Arriving late? Pre-book the transfer and porter.
- Keep your riad’s address and phone number written down.
- Get a Morocco eSIM before landing for maps — compare eSIMs.
- Read our safety and scams guide.
- Allow 2 hours before international departures; security queues can be long.
