Bali’s areas feel like different destinations, and moving between them takes time. Choosing two bases — usually Ubud and the coast — gives you the best of both. This guide compares the main areas, with hotel examples.

Ubud: Bali’s cultural heart
Rice terraces, temples, the Sacred Monkey Forest, art markets and healthy cafés, surrounded by jungle. Stay at least 2–3 nights. Examples: Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan (river valley luxury), COMO Uma Ubud, and countless villas with private pools.
Seminyak: food and sunsets
Bali’s most polished beach area, with restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs like Potato Head. Busy and traffic-heavy, but convenient. Example: The Legian Seminyak.
Canggu: surf and cafés
Surf breaks, rice-field views (fewer each year), brunch spots and nightlife. Popular with digital nomads; traffic on the narrow roads is notorious.
Uluwatu: cliffs and surf
Dramatic limestone cliffs, world-class surf and hidden beaches like Padang Padang and Bingin, plus Uluwatu Temple at sunset. Spread out, so a driver or scooter is useful. Example: Alila Villas Uluwatu.
Nusa Dua and Sanur: calm and family-friendly
Nusa Dua is a gated resort area with wide, calm beaches — easy for families and close to the airport. Sanur is quieter and more local, with a beachfront path and fast boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
