Quick answer: Malacca (Melaka) is a UNESCO-listed colonial port about 150 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Take a bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Melaka Sentral (about 2–2.5 hours, roughly RM12–20), then a 15-minute Grab into the old town. In one day you can see Dutch Square, St Paul’s Hill, the river and Jonker Street. Go on a Friday to Sunday for the night market.

How to get to Malacca

Option Time Cost
Bus from TBS 2–2.5 hours About RM12–20
Private car / Grab About 2 hours Roughly RM200–300 each way
Guided day tour Full day Varies; includes transport and guide

TBS is on the LRT and KTM lines, about 15 minutes from KL Sentral. Buses leave very often; buy tickets at the terminal or online. Book your return seat early on weekends.

Walking route through the old town

  1. Dutch Square: the red Stadthuys (now a history museum), Christ Church and the clock tower.
  2. St Paul’s Hill: climb to the ruined 16th-century St Paul’s Church for views over the town and sea.
  3. Porta de Santiago (A Famosa): the last gate of the Portuguese fortress, at the foot of the hill.
  4. Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum: a wooden replica of a Malay palace.
  5. Melaka River walk: murals, cafés and bridges; take a 45-minute river cruise in the late afternoon.
  6. Jonker Street and Harmony Street: Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temple), Kampung Kling Mosque and the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Temple, all on one street.
  7. Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum: a beautifully preserved Peranakan townhouse.

What to eat in Malacca

  • Chicken rice balls: Hainanese chicken with rice shaped into balls.
  • Nyonya laksa and other Peranakan dishes.
  • Cendol with gula Melaka (palm sugar), perfect in the heat.
  • Satay celup: skewers dipped in a shared pot of peanut sauce.

Jonker Street Night Market

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Jonker Street closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, souvenirs and street performers. It gets very busy after 8pm. If you want to see it, consider staying overnight rather than rushing back to KL.

Should you stay overnight?

A day trip is easy, but Malacca is lovely in the evening when the river lights up and the day-trippers leave. One night lets you see the night market and enjoy breakfast in the old town before the crowds.

Tips

  • Start early: the old town is compact but very hot by midday.
  • Many museums close on Mondays or have shorter hours; check before you go.
  • The colourful trishaws are fun for photos; agree the price before you get in.
