Bukit Bintang

KL’s entertainment district: Jalan Alor food street, big malls, massage spas and bars. Monorail and MRT stations make it easy to get around, and a covered walkway leads to KLCC in about 15 minutes. It can be noisy, so ask for a high floor.

  • Luxury: Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur, JW Marriott
  • Mid-range: plenty of modern 4-star hotels around Jalan Bukit Bintang and Changkat

KLCC

The area around the Petronas Twin Towers, with KLCC Park, Suria KLCC mall and Aquaria. Book a room with a towers view and an infinity pool, one of KL’s classic experiences.

  • Luxury: Mandarin Oriental, The RuMa Hotel
  • Upper mid-range: Traders Hotel (with a sky bar facing the towers)

Chinatown

Around Petaling Street and Central Market, with old shophouses, temples and cheap food. Lots of hostels and boutique guesthouses. Pasar Seni station has LRT and MRT lines and is one stop from KL Sentral.

KL Sentral and Brickfields

KL Sentral is the city’s main transport hub, with the KLIA Ekspres to the airport, KTM trains to the Batu Caves and the LRT, MRT and monorail. Next door, Brickfields is KL’s Little India, great for banana-leaf rice.

  • Upper mid-range: Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral

Bangsar

A leafy residential area popular with locals and expats, full of cafés, brunch spots and bars. It is 10–15 minutes from the centre by LRT or Grab.

Chow Kit and Kampung Baru

North of the centre, with the busy Chow Kit wet market and the Malay village of Kampung Baru. Good value and very local, with the Twin Towers just a short walk across the river.
