Walking route through the old town

- St Paul’s Hill: climb to the ruined 16th-century St Paul’s Church for views over the town and sea.
- Porta de Santiago (A Famosa): the last gate of the Portuguese fortress, at the foot of the hill.
- Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum: a wooden replica of a Malay palace.
- Melaka River walk: murals, cafés and bridges; take a 45-minute river cruise in the late afternoon.

What to eat in Malacca
- Chicken rice balls: Hainanese chicken with rice shaped into balls.
- Nyonya laksa and other Peranakan dishes.
- Cendol with gula Melaka (palm sugar), perfect in the heat.
- Satay celup: skewers dipped in a shared pot of peanut sauce.
Jonker Street Night Market
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Jonker Street closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, souvenirs and street performers. It gets very busy after 8pm. If you want to see it, consider staying overnight rather than rushing back to KL.
Should you stay overnight?
A day trip is easy, but Malacca is lovely in the evening when the river lights up and the day-trippers leave. One night lets you see the night market and enjoy breakfast in the old town before the crowds.
Tips
- Start early: the old town is compact but very hot by midday.
- Many museums close on Mondays or have shorter hours; check before you go.
- The colourful trishaws are fun for photos; agree the price before you get in.
