Quick answer: A Topkapı Palace ticket including the Harem costs foreign visitors about €60–70 in 2026. The palace is closed on Tuesdays, so arrive at the 9am opening and allow about 3 hours. The Museum Pass Istanbul (about 6,500 TL, valid 5 days from first use) includes Topkapı with the Harem, but not Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, Dolmabahçe or Galata Tower.

Topkapı Palace was the centre of the Ottoman Empire for almost 400 years. Its courtyards, pavilions, treasury and the Harem make it the top museum in Istanbul, and the most expensive one.

Is the Museum Pass Istanbul worth it?

It works out if you’ll visit Topkapı with the Harem plus at least two or three of these: the Istanbul Archaeology Museums (about €17), the Hagia Sophia History & Experience Museum (about €25), the Galata Mevlevi Lodge, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts or the Great Palace Mosaic Museum. Besides the savings, the pass lets you skip the ticket queue.

  • The Harem is a maze of tiled rooms where the sultan’s family lived. Don’t skip it.
  • The Imperial Treasury holds the Topkapı Dagger and the Spoonmaker’s Diamond.
  • The Chamber of Holy Relics contains sacred Islamic objects, and you should keep your voice low here.
  • The Fourth Courtyard has pavilions with views over the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
  • The palace kitchens house a huge Chinese porcelain collection.

Tips for visiting

  • Go first thing in the morning on any day except Tuesday, and see the Harem before the groups do.
  • Combine your visit with the Archaeology Museums, which are next to the palace’s outer gate.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, because there’s a lot of walking on uneven paving.
  • Compare Topkapı guided tours if you want the stories behind the rooms.
