Quick answer: The best times to visit Istanbul are April–May, when the parks fill with tulips and highs are around 16–22°C, and September–October, which is warm, with calmer crowds and a good sea for ferries. July–August is hot (around 28°C, and humid) and the busiest season. November–March is cool and rainy, with occasional snow, but has the lowest hotel prices.

Istanbul is a year-round city, but the weather, crowds and prices swing a lot through the year. Here’s a month-by-month guide to help you choose.

Istanbul by season

Season Weather (typical highs) Crowds & prices Verdict
Spring (Apr–May) 16–22°C, mostly dry Busy, mid-high prices ★★★★★ Tulip season
Summer (Jun–Aug) 25–29°C, humid Peak crowds and cruise ships ★★★ Hot, but long evenings
Autumn (Sep–Oct) 20–26°C, warm sea Busy in Sep, easing in Oct ★★★★★ Ideal
Winter (Nov–Mar) 8–12°C, rain, some snow Quiet, cheapest ★★★ Good for museums

Spring: tulips and mild weather

In April, the city plants millions of tulips for the Istanbul Tulip Festival. Emirgan Park and Gülhane Park are the stars. Days are pleasant for walking, though evenings can be cool, so pack a light jacket.

Summer: hot and crowded

July and August bring the most visitors, the longest queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, and humid heat. Sightsee early, rest at midday and spend evenings on rooftops or ferries. Book hotels well ahead.

Autumn: our favourite

September still feels like summer, and October is golden and comfortable. Queues shrink after the summer rush, and it’s a great time for a Bosphorus cruise or a day on the Princes’ Islands.

Winter: cheap and atmospheric

Winters are grey and wet rather than freezing, but snow on the domes happens most years. Hotel prices drop, and the museums, hammams and covered bazaars are perfect on rainy days. New Year is the exception, when prices spike.

Ramadan and holidays

During Ramadan (expected around mid-February to mid-March 2027), sights stay open, and evenings around the Blue Mosque come alive with iftar stalls. Some opening hours shift. During the Eid holidays (Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı), many Turks travel, so transport and resorts get busy, though central Istanbul can feel quieter. Exact dates follow the lunar calendar, so check them before you book.
