Quick answer: Most visa-free visitors to South Korea need a K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization), which costs 10,000 KRW and is applied for online at the official k-eta.go.kr. Citizens of 22 countries and territories, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, are exempt until 31 December 2026. Exempt travellers must complete Korea’s electronic arrival card instead.

Korea’s entry rules have changed several times in recent years. Here’s what applies in 2026 and how to avoid fake application sites.

Who is exempt from K-ETA until 31 December 2026?

The temporary exemption covers: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States (LoyaltyLobby, January 2026). Check before you travel, because the exemption may or may not be extended into 2027.

K-ETA vs the e-Arrival card

Who needs it Visa-free nationals not on the exempt list Travellers without a K-ETA, including exempt nationals
Cost 10,000 KRW Free
Where k-eta.go.kr or the official app Korea’s official e-Arrival website
Benefit No arrival card needed Meets the arrival requirement

Exempt travellers can still choose to apply for a K-ETA (and pay the fee) so they can skip the arrival card.

How to apply for a K-ETA

  1. Go to the official k-eta.go.kr website or app. Avoid agency sites that charge much more.
  2. Enter your passport details, a photo, your travel plans and an address in Korea.
  3. Pay 10,000 KRW by card.
  4. Apply at least 72 hours before departure, because approval can take time.
