Quick answer: The best beaches in Phuket are Kata Noi (beautiful and calmer), Kata (all-rounder, surf in the monsoon), Nai Harn (local favourite), Freedom Beach (secluded), Kamala and Surin (quiet and upmarket), Karon (long and less crowded) and Patong (busy, with nightlife). The west-coast beaches are best from November to April. In the monsoon, watch for red flags.

Phuket has more than 30 beaches, mostly along its west coast. Here’s how the best ones compare, so you can pick the right one for your trip and your base.

The south: Kata Noi, Kata, Nai Harn

The southern beaches have the best mix of beauty and convenience. Kata Noi is tucked below the cliffs and is often the clearest water on the island. Kata has plenty of restaurants and gentle waves in high season. Nai Harn is loved by long-staying visitors and is close to Promthep Cape.

The west: Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin

Karon is long and less crowded than Patong. Patong is busy with jet skis and parasailing, and is next to Bangla Road. Kamala and Surin are calmer, with beach clubs and upmarket resorts.

Hidden coves

Freedom Beach is reached by longtail from Patong or a steep trail. Banana Beach and Ya Nui are small, scenic and good for snorkelling in calm conditions.

Beach safety

  • Red flag = no swimming. Rip currents during the May–October monsoon are dangerous and cause drownings every year.
  • Swim near lifeguards where possible, and never swim after drinking.
  • Smoking and leaving litter are banned on many Thai beaches, with fines.
